Amanohashidate

· 宮津市, 京都府

Amanohashidate, meaning 'Bridge to Heaven,' is one of Japan's three most scenic views, featuring a stunning 3.6-kilometer sandbar covered with approximately 8,000 pine trees that stretches across Miyazu Bay. Visitors traditionally view this natural wonder by bending over and looking at it upside-down between their legs, creating the illusion of a bridge floating in the sky. The area offers cycling paths along the sandbar, scenic cable cars and chair lifts to observation decks, and nearby temples including the historic Chion-ji Temple.

💡 Tips for Visitors

The best views are from the observation decks on either side of the bay (north at Kasamatsu Park or south at Amanohashidate View Land), accessible by cable car or chair lift. Limited English signage is available, so download maps beforehand or pick up an English pamphlet at Amanohashidate Station. Bicycle rentals along the sandbar accept cash only, and visiting during spring or autumn offers the most pleasant weather and beautiful seasonal colors.
