Gion
🌿 Nature & Parks · kyoto, Kyoto
Gion is Kyoto's most famous geisha district, where traditional wooden machiya houses line narrow stone-paved streets that have remained virtually unchanged for centuries. Visitors can glimpse elegantly dressed geiko and maiko hurrying to evening appointments, browse traditional tea houses and craft shops, and experience authentic old Japan. The atmospheric Hanami-koji Street offers an enchanting journey back in time, especially magical during early evening when the lanterns are lit.

💡 Tips for Visitors
Visit during early evening (around 6-7 PM) for the best chance to see geiko and maiko, but remember to be respectful—never block their path or touch them for photos. Many establishments are members-only, but several tea houses and restaurants welcome tourists; cash is preferred at traditional venues. The area is best explored on foot, and photography of geiko/maiko requires permission and discretion.
