Kanto Odori (Kanto Matsuri Festival)
· 秋田市, 秋田県
The Kanto Matsuri is one of Tohoku's most spectacular summer festivals, held annually in Akita City each August. Performers balance massive bamboo poles called kanto—laden with up to 46 paper lanterns weighing over 50kg—on their palms, foreheads, shoulders, and hips in an incredible display of strength and skill. The sight of hundreds of illuminated lanterns swaying against the night sky creates a magical atmosphere that celebrates the region's rice harvest traditions.
