⛩️ Shrines & Temples · ,

Kotohira-gū, affectionately known as 'Konpira-san,' is one of Shikoku's most revered Shinto shrines, perched majestically on Mount Zozu in Kagawa Prefecture. The pilgrimage to reach the main shrine requires climbing 785 stone steps through atmospheric forested paths lined with lanterns, souvenir shops, and traditional restaurants. Founded over a thousand years ago as a guardian shrine for seafarers, it rewards determined visitors with stunning architecture, sacred treasures, and panoramic views of the Sanuki Plain.

💡 Tips for Visitors

Wear comfortable walking shoes as the 785-step climb takes 30-40 minutes; there's an optional additional 583 steps to the inner shrine. The shrine accepts cash donations and most shops along the path are cash-only, so bring yen. Visit early morning to avoid crowds and heat, especially in summer; the steps can be challenging in Japan's humid weather.
