Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks)
· 伊勢市, Mie
Meoto Iwa, or the Wedded Rocks, are two sacred rocks in the sea joined by a heavy rope called shimenawa, symbolizing the union of the creator gods Izanagi and Izanami. Located along the scenic coastline of Futami in Mie Prefecture, these rocks are considered one of Japan's most romantic and spiritual sights, especially stunning at sunrise when Mount Fuji can be visible in the distance on clear days. The larger rock stands 9 meters tall and is topped with a small torii gate, making it a popular spot for couples and photographers seeking to capture this iconic symbol of marriage and harmony.
