Nagoro "Scarecrow" Village

· , Tokushima · 笘・{spot.rating}

Nagoro, a remote mountain village in Tokushima Prefecture, is home to over 350 life-sized scarecrow dolls that outnumber the living residents by more than 10 to 1. Created by local artist Ayano Tsukimi to repopulate her aging village, these eerily lifelike figures are positioned throughout the hamlet in everyday scenes—waiting at bus stops, working in fields, and sitting in the old schoolhouse. This hauntingly beautiful art installation offers a poignant reflection on rural depopulation in Japan while providing one of the country's most unusual and memorable photo opportunities.

💡 Tips for Visitors

Bring cash as there are no ATMs, shops, or restaurants in the village. The site is best accessed by rental car as public transportation is extremely limited; it's about a 2-hour drive from Tokushima City through winding mountain roads. Visit during daylight hours (no set opening times), and be respectful as this is still a real village where a handful of elderly residents live among the dolls.
