Nara Park is a sprawling 500-hectare public park famous for its over 1,000 free-roaming sacred deer that have become beloved symbols of the city. Visitors can feed the friendly deer with special crackers called 'shika senbei' and watch them bow politely in request for treats, creating unforgettable interactions with these gentle creatures. The park also serves as a scenic gateway to Nara's most important temples and shrines, including the magnificent Todaiji Temple with its giant Buddha statue.

💡 Tips for Visitors

Deer crackers cost 200 yen and are sold by vendors throughout the park; avoid feeding them other food as it can harm them. Visit early morning for a more peaceful experience with fewer crowds and calmer deer. Be cautious with your belongings as deer may nibble on maps, bags, or clothing—they can be pushy when they see food but will lose interest once you show your hands are empty.
