Sakurai Futamigaura's Couple Stones

· , Fukuoka · 笘・{spot.rating}

Sakurai Futamigaura's Couple Stones, or Meoto Iwa, are two sacred rocks rising from the sea, connected by a thick shimenawa (sacred rope) that symbolizes the union between the Shinto deities Izanagi and Izanami. This iconic sight is particularly breathtaking at sunrise, when the sun appears to rise between the rocks, creating a magical moment that has captivated visitors for centuries. The larger rock stands 9 meters tall while the smaller one reaches 4 meters, and the rope between them is ceremonially replaced three times per year in traditional Shinto rituals.
