The Zao Echo Line is a spectacular 26-kilometer mountain highway that winds through the volcanic landscape of the Zao mountain range, connecting Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures. This scenic toll road offers breathtaking views of emerald crater lakes, dramatic peaks, and lush forests, with the famous Okama Crater Lake being the highlight of any journey. During winter, the road transforms into a snowy wonderland surrounded by the iconic juhyo 'snow monsters' - trees completely covered in frozen snow and ice.

💡 Tips for Visitors
The road is only open from late April to early November due to heavy snowfall, so plan your visit accordingly. A toll fee is required (around 540 yen), and cash is recommended as card acceptance may be limited. The best viewing conditions are typically in the morning before clouds roll in, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather and cooler temperatures at the summit even in summer.
