Β· sendai, Miyagi
Yamadera, officially known as Risshaku-ji Temple, is a spectacular mountain temple complex perched on cliffsides in Yamagata Prefecture. Founded in 860 AD, this sacred site features over 1,000 stone steps winding through ancient cedars, leading to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. The temple gained literary fame through the haiku poet Matsuo Basho, who visited in 1689 and was inspired by its profound serenity.

π‘ Tips for Visitors
Wear comfortable walking shoes as the 1,015-step climb takes 40-60 minutes; the path can be steep and slippery in wet conditions. Cash is required for the entrance fee (300 yen) and at small shops along the route, as card payment is limited. Visit early morning or on weekdays to avoid crowds, and note that winter visits offer stunning snow-covered scenery but require extra caution on icy steps.
